Pregnant and Planning Your Wedding Dress? Here's How to Get the Right Fit

by Dreamyannie Admin 28 Sep 2026 0 comments

Congratulations — you're engaged and expecting! What a beautiful chapter. But if you're wondering how on earth to choose a wedding dress size when your body is changing week by week, you're not alone. This is one of the most common questions we receive at Dreamyannie, and the good news is: with the right approach, you can find a gown that fits beautifully on your big day.

Every Pregnancy Body Is Different

There is no universal rule for how much your measurements will change during pregnancy. Your pre-pregnancy weight, body type, diet, and your baby's growth all play a role. That said, there are general trends based on medical guidance that can help you plan ahead.

Understanding How Your Measurements May Change

Bust

Your bust tends to increase most noticeably in the first trimester, often by around one cup size (approximately 1 inch / 2.5 cm) within the first few weeks due to hormonal surges. By the end of your pregnancy, most women find their bust has grown by 2 to 4 inches (5–10 cm) in total.

Waist

This is where the most significant change occurs. During the first trimester, your waist may only increase by 0–1 inch. From the second trimester onwards — once your bump becomes visible — growth accelerates to roughly 1.5 to 2 inches (4–5 cm) per month. By the third trimester, your waist may be 10 to 15+ inches (25–38+ cm) larger than before pregnancy.

Hips

Hip measurements typically increase during the second and third trimesters, by 2 to 5 inches (5–13 cm) overall. This is partly due to your pelvis naturally widening to prepare for birth, and partly due to natural fat redistribution.

Practical Tips for Choosing Your Size

1. Order based on your largest measurement. Bridal sizing is notoriously difficult to alter at the waist and bust simultaneously. Always size up to accommodate the measurement that will be largest on your wedding day — typically the waist in later pregnancy.

2. Calculate where you'll be in your pregnancy on the day. Work backwards from your wedding date to estimate which trimester you'll be in. This will give you a clearer picture of how your body may look and help you communicate with your dressmaker.

3. Allow extra time for alterations. We recommend ordering your gown at least 5–6 months before your wedding if you're pregnant, and leaving your final fitting as close to the day as possible — ideally no more than 4–6 weeks prior.

4. Consider styles that offer more flexibility. Empire-waist gowns, A-line silhouettes, and styles with corset or lace-up backs naturally accommodate a growing bump with minimal alteration. Fitted styles such as mermaid or trumpet cuts are more challenging and require very precise timing.

5. Communicate openly with your seamstress. Be transparent about your pregnancy and your due date. A skilled bridal seamstress will help you plan fittings strategically and may suggest letting out seams or adding a panel to allow for growth.

A Note on Ordering Early

At Dreamyannie, all of our gowns are made to order, with a standard production time of 8–12 weeks. If you're expecting, we strongly recommend reaching out to our team as early as possible so we can advise on the best size and silhouette for your timeline. We're here to make this process as stress-free and joyful as it should be.

Your pregnancy is a gift, and your wedding day should be everything you've dreamed of — bump and all. 🤍
